What the Festival Is

The Sapporo Snow Festival is Hokkaido's best-known winter event, held across three sites in central Sapporo. Large snow and ice sculptures are the main draw, alongside food stalls and evening light-ups. Beyond that, we're sticking to what's confirmed above rather than guessing at specifics that can change year to year.

Why Book Early for This One

Unlike a museum ticket, you don't need to reserve anything to attend the festival itself — it's free and open to the public. The reason to plan early is logistics, not admission: February is peak winter travel season in Hokkaido, and flights and hotels in Sapporo around these dates can fill up or get expensive well in advance. If these dates work for your trip, it's worth locking in flights and accommodation sooner rather than later.

Where to stay
Sapporo hotels on Booking.com
What this is
A hotel search for the city, so you can set your own dates and compare. We have not stayed at any of these. We are not recommending a hotel — we are pointing you at the list.

The same applies to the ride in from the airport: JR runs six Airport Trains an hour from New Chitose into Sapporo between 09:00 and 16:00, and how long it takes depends on which one you catch — the fastest Special Rapid is 33 minutes, the Rapid services 37, and the Semi-Rapid 43. Seats can be bought on the day at the station, but the same ticket is also sold in advance on Klook if you would rather not queue after landing.

A Heads-Up on the Official Site

If you check the English version of the official site, you may see older information — as of our last check, the English pages were still showing details from a previous year's festival, while the Japanese homepage had the current 2027 dates. If you're relying on machine translation or the English pages directly, cross-check the Japanese homepage for the latest dates before finalizing plans.

The Bottom Line

You can't reserve a spot at the Sapporo Snow Festival, but you can absolutely lose your ideal flight or hotel if you wait too long. Treat the confirmed dates as your cue to book travel, not the festival itself.
